collection of James Lordi
(Graphite and soft-lead pencil on Bristol board)
This piece was inspired by a gentle soul named Lorenzo
who, at the time, was the usual counter person
in my favorite South Austin café.
Lorenzo was truly a visually striking expression
of the coupling of two races
along with the blending of multiple cultures,
a joyous manifestation of Humankind.
Lorenzo sported a crown of small braids
much like the one in this piece, which fascinated me.
Beyond the visual, Lorenzo was one of the most gentle
and caring individuals
I have had the great fortune to meet.
Lorenzo also lived in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Austin,
represented by the wall of graffiti in the background.
This piece is intended to be recognition of,
a celebration of the strength of this soul.
A recognition of this man’s ability to maintain
a truly lovely and love filled life in spite of,
or more likely in concert with,
what most would see as his material hardship, his material lacking.
Lorenzo expressed true comfort and happiness with his life.
He had no desire to change it at all.
His monk-like life was of the spiritual, not of the material.
Remarkable.
