Klocksieben
(watercolor and soft lead pencil on Bristol board)
This piece is a bit difficult for me to explain.
I have always held an affinity for the number 7.
It has, over the years, been related to me
that in some cultures it is considered a divine number
offering the perfect environment for reaching spiritual harmony.
Contained within, three units are provisioned
for the two sides of an argument with one unit available
to settle all conflict, to reach an accord.
In this piece I have depicted a clock
upon which we, as a species, are moving toward
this divine hour of our evolution.
A figure, a prisoner from the German death camps,
provides the hands of this clock.
In the background we have a depiction
of the camp at Dachau, Germany as a symbol of the elements
in place to slow down, perhaps prevent all together,
our reaching this hour of enlightenment.
It is a representation of the systemic imposition
of good versus evil contained within our makeup, within our DNA.
The battle rages on within us as a species,
but equally within each of us as individuals.
